Stay-at-home Moms and the Importance of their Mental Health

Writer's picture: Elizabeth SingletonElizabeth Singleton

Being a stay-at-home mom is a rewarding and challenging experience that many women take on. While it can bring immense joy, it can also be difficult for a mom to handle the stress and pressures of being at home all day with the kids. Mental health issues can arise due to the physical, emotional and psychological demands of the job. In this blog post, we will explore the mental health struggles faced by stay-at-home moms and provide tips on how to manage these issues.

The physical demands of being a stay-at-home mom can take a toll on a woman’s mental health. The constant running around, cleaning, cooking, and caring for the kids can be exhausting and leave a mom feeling overwhelmed and worn down. This can lead to feelings of depression, anxiety, and even burnout.

In addition to the physical demands, the emotional and psychological demands can be difficult to handle. Being isolated from other adults can lead to feelings of loneliness, and the lack of appreciation for the work being done can lead to feelings of resentment and frustration. These emotions can be compounded when a stay-at-home mom’s partner works outside the home and may not understand the amount of work that goes into being a stay-at-home mom. My husband used to have a hard time understanding my jealousy of his job. He gets to go out into the world, talk to adults, do "grown up things", and not have to hear his name every 5 seconds...

So, how can stay-at-home moms manage these mental health issues? The first step is to recognize that these feelings are normal and that it’s okay to ask for help. Reach out to other stay-at-home moms who may be going through the same struggles, or seek professional help if needed.

It’s also important to make time for yourself. Make sure to take breaks throughout the day, even if it’s just a few minutes, to do something that you enjoy. Taking a walk, reading a book, or going for a drive can all be helpful in relieving stress and giving yourself a mental break.

Finally, make sure to stay connected with other adults. This can be done through joining a local mom’s group or social club (like the American Legion), attending community events, or even just having a phone or video call with friends and family. This can help to provide support and a sense of community, which is important for staying mentally healthy. The sisterhood that I've found with my direct sales business has been nothing short of amazing!

Being a stay-at-home mom is rewarding, but it's HARD! Please know that you aren't alone on this journey. There is a whole community of women walking through this season with you.
